I have also had a problem with the windshield smear you discussed, not on my
TR6 but on another vehicle. I was watching a documentary about the different
uses of glass one day and an engineer for a company that manufactures
windshields was discussing the cleaning process they use in factory testing.
He said that they use Bon Ami cleaner to clean windshields. I have tried this
and had excellent results. It will not scratch the windshield and does an
excellent job of removing the road grime and oil that causes the smears. The
only thing that I would advise is to ensure that you rinse all of the cleaner
off the windshield and car body. I have never tried it on my TR6, but that is
only because I haven't had to to this point. I would not hesitate to use it.
You may want to give it a try on your brother-in-law's new porsche before you
use it on a real car.
