Volume, actually.
It's actually the high velocity of the conventional gun that
makes it use so much paint. It causes the paint to bounce off the
surface, and also causes such turbulence at the surface that
a lot of paint is blasted back and into the air.

Like a wagner powerpainter?
If you want a quick and dirty job, use spray cans. If you want
an even quicker job, use foam brushes. If you want better than
those options, go all the way.
