Hi Malcolm,
I had a similar, if not same problem with my 250 several years ago. Took
a lot of fiddling around, but finally found that when I turned the key to
start, the power to the coil was turned off. It would 'kick start' every
time, and some times it would start when I released the key.
It would some times start when I released the key from the start
position, if it had enough momentum to have the motor turning over when
the spark was turned back on, when I released it out of the start mode.
Make any sense?
I finally figured it out and hooked up a 'contact; switch'. That would
send power to the coil when I was trying to start it. It now works all
the time.
Good luck.
