On my 76 the trunk light only lights when the master light switch is in
either the park or main position. When the lights (park or headlights) are
off, the trunk light is also off even if the trunk is open. This (according
to the 76 wiring diagram) is by design. I am not suggesting I agree with the
design but that is the way it is :-)

I am not sure of the wiring for your model(s).

Also, perhaps the "only when lights are on" design prevents undue draining
of the battery whenever the switch fails and causes the light to stay on
indefinitely. Of course this, ahem, design "feature" is not incorporated in
the glove box light or the driver's and passenger's side interior lights,
which do indeed come on whenever their corresponding switch is activated
(regardless of the parking or headlights being on or off). Inconsistent?
Perhaps, but what do I know?
