Perhaps, but not necessarily. There was a Spit I heard of that was sold
for $200 or so, needed lots of work (blown engine), but could probably
have been forced to run for not a lot.
Your biggest advantage will be patience. A car will come along, or a deal
will sweeten (esp. if the seller actually goes out and looks at their
"prized" sports car- that's how I got mine)
For a prime example of a "cheap car that needs a lot of work", see my

(cdn) and it only really needed a new body. (ugh) ..and front brakes,
and hydraulics, and a few other odds & ends...

If yer itching for a sports car, expand your horizons. Maybe a fiat will
come up that matches your needs. Or a Datsun roadster. Check out the
classifieds, make some calls, do some leg-work. Then see where you're at.
