mike, the guide to valve clearance was probably the culprit. with crome
flashed stems and bronze guides, the int should be .0008 to .0012 ,exh
.0005 more, make sure you have modern valves as a lot of people are
selling junk. see the trw cataloge at your jobber for a more through
description, but stainless head, bimetalic construction and a chrome
flashed stem should be there. stellite seats are requided on exh, and
stellite tips are very nice. also , you should have the aux. oil line to
the rocker shaft installed. sorry this is a simplistic reply but ther are
many other things you can also do wrong to sieze guides, but 90% of the
time the clearances are tight.

ps. better slightly tight and have an extended break-in than too loose.
don't be too mad at your machinist. he had the right idea. just a little
sloppy on QC.
