  I'd highly suggest renting a welder. You can learn to use it
and do the job in a weekend.

  Welding is a lot easier than pop rivetting. The job is actually
a lot easier to do properly than to do otherwise.

  Buying a welder can get pricey and perhaps might never get
used enough to justify the purchase, but renting a MIG for a weekend
isn't that expensive. Pick it up friday night, spend friday night
practicing with scraps, and do the work saturday and sunday.
