Ken,
First of all your 1973 TR6 is exempt from ALL Ca. smog testing requirements.
Just ran my TR7 through today and they had the 1973 and before exemption notice
prominantly displayed.
Next, do not, repeat, do not try and deal with DMV or CARB. They are the
largest collection of below room temperature IQ people on the face of the
earth. Locate and join the local chapter of the AAA. They provide registration
services and are very nice to deal with and believe me I've thrown them some
toughies. They should be able to answer all your questions.
I believe you can bring the car in, register it as non-op (you won't be given
license plates) and then when the car is together, they can issue a one day
permit so you can leagally drive the car to AAA so it can be "verified". That
is, they will check he cars VIN against the paperwork and then they should
issue you plates and tags. When they ask you about how you got the car to a
mechanic or transported it into the state, make sure and say it was TRAILERED,
not towed or driven. If the car turns a wheel on a puplic road even if it being
towed, you will be liable for back registration fees. Remember ,trailered. As
for test drives prior to registration etc, at your own risk, but chances are
you won't get stopped.
As for the mods, as I understand the rules (I may be wrong) your car is exempt
from testing, however, it is still technically not allowed to be modified in a
way that bypasses or disables the smog equipment. But since you are not
required to have it tested, who's going to check? If for some reason, some
official type person questions the header, plead ignorance and say thats the
way the car was when you bought it and you thought they were all like that.
Lastly, you should of course contact the folks at Triumph Travellers Sports Car
Club in the San Jose area. (see the VTR WEB page www.vtr.org and go to the
chapters section). And get the car together in time for Triumphest in San Luis
Obispo Oct. 22-25 ( for info contact Jan Dawson, 909-735-1626 or
akatr5@aol.com). And when you go to Triumphest, take Hwy 1.
