This one just won't die, despite the fact that the head of BMW has clearly
stated that there are no plans to
resurrect any of the old marques (except of course MG and Mini), European Car
Magazine is reporting that
Rover will soon launch a mid-engined roadster as the MGD (possible) to be
followed by a larger V8 engined
roadster badged as an (wait for it) Austin-Healey. It further states that an
even larger roadster is planned for
the year 2000 and will more than likely revive the Triumph TR name. Both cars
will be derived from the next
generation BMW 5-series floorpan and will be available with either V6 or V8
engines as well as manual or
auto boxes. This is assuming that the propeller heads at BMW have any money
left after buying Rolls.
If you ever want to have a little fun at how accurate most of these "scoop"
predictions are, read some 6 or 8
year old car mags and see how many of the predictions from back then panned out.
I'm still waiting for the mid-engined Corvette.
