Thanks again to all of you that had helpful advice on my stater problems.
Here's an update for all who are eagerly waiting.
It turns out that the transmission, starter, and, thank-god, flywheel must
have been replaced with an earlier vintage. The starter rebuild, however,
must have been messed up because there was a lot of movement in the shaft,
and, hopefully, that was the reason the gear got all chewed up. The ring
gear is not in great shape either, but hopefully it will serve its purpose.
I spoke to Peter at World Wide Auto Parts today and he agreed to try to
rebuild it the right way.
