Brian,
You are correct, but according to John Thomason, the reason is because
the trim gets in the way of attaching the snaps that secure the top. 
And trust me on this one, he is correct.  The change was made after
FC5463 and later (after FC18814)the bright aluminum finisher was changed
to fill the gap left by the shorter Stainless seam trim.
