Dear Listers - I write this just a cautionary note to any who may
be contemplating putting a new throw out bearing in their TR6
while they are doing the clutch. We did a restoration on a 73
TR6 last fall and at that time put in a new clutch and throw out
bearing supplied by Victoria British. The throw out bearing came
in a clear plastic bag with no indication of manufacturer. When
our customer had less than 500 miles on the car the bearing became
very noisy and we replaced it this spring with another bearing
that again was supplied by VB and came in the same clear plastic
bag. On Monday, the car will be back again and we will be putting
in another throw out bearing from a different supplier. We checked
the cross shaft bushings the last time the job was done, and that
is not the problem - they are defective bearings. This time the
bearing packed it in after only a couple of hundred miles.
I have no doubt that VB will stand good on the two bearings that
were defective, but as you must realize, this job is labour intensive
and it rankles me that we have to go through the whole exercise three
times to effect a proper repair.
Be warned!
Cheers,
Len Drake
