Thnks all of you that responded to my previous question. I haven't removed
the starter yet to peek inside at the ring gear, but in my own convoluted
logic, I concluded that what ever I found, I would need a rebuilt starter.
Rather than trying to get mine rebuilt again I ordered one from NW British
Parts.

The starter arrived today, but it is different than the one that came with
the car. The current one looks like the one in the Moss catalog. It has a
nose on it and it set up so that the gear goes away form the starter body
to engage the ring gear.

The new one doesn't have the nose cone and it is set up so the gear travels
towards the starter body to engage the ring gear.

One more clue; when I bought the car, the starter was hanging on by one
undersized bolt. My questions:

1. Will either of these work? When I told the guy at NM BP that I had a
'61 TR3A, he had no doubt whatsoever that this was the right starter.

2. Could the currently installed one be the wrong one? (I wouldn't put
anything past the DPO)

3. Could that be why it's giving me trouble?

4. If this is the right one, do I need one or more spacers as described by
Moss? How would I know how many?

TIA, your collective and infinite wisdom is greatly appreciated.

Bob
