I removed my canister from the top several times without disconnecting the fuel pump. I disconnected the steering shaft at the flex coupling and brought it out forward of the fuel pump. To make sure the canister was properly seated, I'd jiggle the canister to make sure it was seated in the grove of the block. When it doesn't move much, you're in the right place.
