Nigel,

I did this very job last week. I discovered as you did, that the 
flexibility of the shock link bushings prevented my "pickle fork" from 
breaking them loose. (I even soaked the tapered fitting in penetrating 
oil off and on for several days.) My puller wouldn't fit between the 
backing plate and the shock mount, so I finally pulled the spring pads 
loose and removed the complete shock/shock link assembly at one time. 
The taper pin was then easy to remove on the bench.
