Worldly Scions,
I'm having problems removing a Spit 1500 cylinder head. I was able
to remove all studs but two relatively easily. The two stubborn
ones are- the front one on the manifold side (of course), and
the middle one (same side). I did the "rope trick" inserting it
in #2 cyl. When the head popped loose, it raised up about a half
inch at the back of the motor, but none at the front. I'm afraid
the remaining studs are now slightly bent. I tapped the head back
down flush with the motor and attempted to thread the studs out
again, but they will not turn. I'm was "double nutting" them.
Out of desperation I got out the Vise-Grips and only managed to
bugger up the threads. These things don't want to come out :-(
If I can just remove one of these studs, I can rotate the whole
head to separate it from the block, BTDT. The engine is a spare
and not in a car.
So it looks like my remaining options are:
a) Buy a stud extractor - Do these things really work well?
b) use the "blue wrench" - Will heat damage anything here?
Any other tips?
Thanks in advance,
Bob (& '78 Spitfires)
