It's happened to me, on a Pontiac Grand Parisienne. Backfired through the
carb and blew the (fortunately not screwed-down) air filter cover two feet
into the air! When my ears stopped ringing, Dad said, "Well, the ignition
works!"

Check that the rotor points to the correct lead at top-dead-centre on the
power stroke.
