If its not already too late, disconnect the wire to the overdrive solenoid
but try to ensure the overdrive is disengaged when you do this.
You may remember that moving the gear lever with the O/D switched on caused
a clicking noise? This is the inhibitor switch overriding the column switch
to disengage. Sounds to me as if your inhibitor switch or the circuitry
leading to it is defective. The overdrive epicyclic is only designed to run
in one direction, namely forwards. For heavens sake disengage it before you
do any more damage.
