The Truth is Out There....or so I am hoping.

 Last week I had installed a grose-jet in my Spitfire's Zenith-Stromberg
150CD carb, and it fixed the gas-leak-after-turn-off problem I was having,

The needle set up almost all the way "lean" (counter-clockwise) but the
plugs were OK (nice, light gray) and the catalytic converter no longer
glowed red. Idle was set at 1000 rpm.

Today I took the Spitfire out for a ride. After the engine warmed up I
noted that the idle was a little high (1300RPM) and should be readjusted.
A few minutes later, at the next stop, the car wouldn't idle...had to pull
out the manual choke and keep it at 1800 RPM to get home.

After pulling the air filter box and peering in, I didn't see anything
wrong at the intake end. I checked the distributor cap, rotor, and timing
and found all to be well. I finally had to adjust the carb mixture screw
substantially richer to get the car to idle again.

The question is: what happened here?
