I've used the technique described in the TR4 workshop manual says that the
grease cap (dust cover) can be removed by using a number 10 fine thread
bolt threaded into the cap.  You can get an idea of the length required by
poking a fine drill bit or wire through the hole until it touches the stub
axle and choosing a bolt about an inch longer.  As the bolt is tightened
against the stub axle it pushes the cap off, or at least loosens it. 
Unfortunately on some cars the PO has used a sheet metal screw, as many of
you suggest, and wrecked the hole in the cap so that a bolt won't work and
neither will a sheet metal screw.
