Grateful thanks to all who replied. I have had problems with a master
cylinder leaking internally before, on a Mini. I found out I had no braking
by knocking over
the air gauge at the local garage!
The fluid in my PI's master cylinder is clearly brand new and the top of the
cylinder has been painted on the top where the cap screws on. This leads me
to suspect that the cylinder has been pushing fluid back up into the
reservoir and out of the cap. I also suspect the cylinder has already been
re-rubbered so I've bitten the bullet and ordered a new cylinder from TD
Fitchett.
Also, the front discs are thin, especially on the outer edges. I've also had
this before on a Scimitar GTE and replacement increased the braking
efficiency by 25%, shown in a before and after test on a set of brake
rollers. So, I've also oredred a pair of discs. Strangely, my local motor
parts supliers can get Mk.I discs for £25+VAT each. Mk.II discs aren't
available except via specialists at £35+Vat+Carriage.
Using 20/50 oil in the gearbox has allowed me to get second gear from cold
although there is an element of technique involved. The change seems fine
when hot.
Haven't yet had the time to play with the fuel injection so I'll try the
advice and let you know.
Finally, to Chris Oliver. I don't know of much local car/Triumph activity in
early april, other than the Rufforth Autojumble on the 1st. Saturday of each
month. I normally go to three shows: The Minster Lions show on York
Racecourse (usually July), the Harrogate Show including the Northern
Scimitar Day (at Ripley Castle this year) and the late season (September)
York Historic Vehicle Rally, again on the Racecourse. I don't have the exact
dates but Classic Motor Monthly publishes them.
Bye for now and thanks again,
David Hill
