Further to my input on this car yesterday, I've been able to turn up the
DEFINITIVE description from the British Motor Industry Heritage Guide,
which hopefully put further speculation to bed.
Quote
"Introduced in 1981, the Acclaim was the first result of the collaboration
between Honda and BL and was based on the Honda Ballade, which in turn was
a derivative of the Civic. The car was built in the Morris factory at
Cowley, with 1.3 litre engines shipped in from Japan. It was quite
successful and almost 134,000 were made. This was the last Acclaim to be
built, and also the last car to be called Triumph."

This says it all. Modified Japanese design, Japanese manufactured and
sourced powerplant - and built in 'Sacred Cowley' of all place by Morris
employees. Not a Triumph for the purists, methinks!
