Hi Barry,
Hope everything is going well with you and yours. I was reading one
of the mags I get and they had a little quiz to test their readers
"oil" knowledge. One the the questions they posed was:
You bought a Model A out of 30 years' storage. It ran
OK to begin with, but after a few hundred miles and
some regular maintenance it began to smoke.
The answer was that the car had been switched over to use multi-weight
detergent oil instead of the 30-weight the car ran on over the years.
They said that the problem is that engines which have been fed a
steady diet of old-fashioned, non-detergent oil tend to seal their
rings and cylinders with baked hydrocarbons. Detergent oil removes
these deposites, usually leading to significant oil burning.
I remembered that you had asked about this and I thought I'd pass
the info along.
