Jeff - One of the first projects my wife and I did together on our TR4 was to very carefully use a razor blade to pop off the layer of varnish. (I HAD removed the gauges and am pretty mechanically challenged.) This worked quite well for us - then we lightly sanded and applied polyurethane. Also we steel wooled with 000 between coats.
