Steve,
I recently had my pinion (and outer) seal replaced. The replacement I
received from TRF was not leather but rubber (looked like a regular
seal). I am not sure if I still have the old one but if you need the
dimensions I can probably try to get them this weekend (if I fond the
old one at my parents' house). Let me know if you want me to look (I
won't be there til the weekend).
As for the double seal method, here is what I did for the timing cover
seal on my car. I had a replacement front engine seal (from TRF) and
went to a local bearing supply house. They were able to match the seal
with an identically dimensioned one but with a double lip. This way I
only had to install one seal but I got (approximately) twice the sealing
since it was like installing two slim seals. Once you get the
dimensions, see if your bearing supplier have a double lip version.
While you are doing the pinion, perhaps you should do the outer axle
seals as well? And I would definitely look at the vent plug, often if it
is plugged up and can't release the internal pressure in the diff, the
oil will force its way out the seals. Maybe this is why yours is leaking
(apart from an old and maybe dried out seal).
