I have a 79 Spitfire and I made the mistake of turning off the radio and
opening the window on an afternoon ride in New England. There were two noises
that made themselves known. One was a Squeak from the driver's side in the
rear. The other noise sounded like a clunk when shifting gears.
After the ride I jacked the car up and spun the offending rear wheel. I seem
to have located the squeak. Figuring out what is causing it and how to correct
it is another matter. I did grease the fitting on the rear wheel and will
take it to work and listen in the morning( its a daily driver). While under
the car (safely up on jack stands) I grabbed the drive shaft and was able to
twist it about a 1/4 of an inch and get a clunking sound. How much play should
I expect from this shaft? Am I looking at u-joints that have gone bad? Is this
a DIY project? Is there a consensus on quality joints? Anything else I might
check ? TIA
