Aaron,
Dave Terrick in Winnipeg here. Yes you do have a problem. Actually, I had
a similar one. Honestly, at this point (voice of experience speaking VERY
LOUDLY here) you are better off to either buy a new GT box outright (VB) or
do the conversion. I can guarantee that you have other problems and by
now, an irregular wear pattern on the countergear. I take the perverse
pleasure in creating these frankensteinish boxes out of TR7 and other
bits... it took me three goes to get it to work properly this summer....
because I vintage raced the car (show quality) and I neeeded the
reliability. That and I spent all the rest of my money on the paint and
tires.
If you want it right the first time, just get a new one. If you can find
someone to do the Supra adaptor I would be interested in that person making
2. A 5 speed would make a huge difference on the highway.
Oh, another thing...the diff. Eventually, you will blow that up too. My
research shows that most Jap cars have "R" series diffs all made by the
same company. EG, the Datsun 510 and 240's use an R180 of various ratios,
the 300 Z and Maxima use an R 200 (bigger). Go through your local library
and find a ratio set you like, then get one out of a wrecker. You could,
for example, use the Supra tranny and the 510 gears (about a 3.7 or 4.1)
and get blistering acceleration and a normal cruising speed. Or, you
could get the Maxima gears (about 3.45) and have the same acceleration and
a 1500 rev hwy cruiser. I admire the stockness of your car but at a
certain point function is more NB than form. Hey, without a tranny it
just sits around, right?

PS Good Luck and how's that for verbose?
