All,

O.K. you want to import a car to Oz, well fortunately it won't be too hard.

It will be required that you obtain an engineers report on the car, to state
that it complies with all the ADR's (Australian Design Rules) pertinent to
that year of car.

However as it will already be RHD, you wont need a structural report!.

The design rules that will effect a 77 will be (at least I would have to go
and check for others):

1: Brake hoses must be to AS (Australian Standard) xxxx or equivalent (I
beleive new BS stamped hoses would do, most engineers will demand replaced
hoses).

2: Seat belts with AS xxxx (92) stamped on them (you'll need new ones, they
wont accept BS ones, ask how I know).

and that's about it (not hard). We didn't have any smog gear in 77, so the
car can be fast and dirty!.

I would also agree with others who have said to bring in any spares that are
large, or a bit difficult to get (switche for example). Generally rebiuld
stuff is pretty available, except for diff's, and 3rail/4syncro gearbox
(early and late boxes are not too bad), the other exception would be
pistons, which are starting to get ridiculously expensive over here.

To minimise the cost of importing the car, I would strongly suggest that you
don't complete the rebiuld, and import it as a 'car, not roadworthy,
therfore lower value', this will alow you to lower the value of the vehicle
(so don't say there spares, in which case they'll charge you a fortune) and
include spares into the car (they wont know that there are 3 diffs in
there!) and so keep the import duty costs down.

I'll have a look for the ADR info at home (some time next week) and shoot
off any other requirements. Note that to register the car you will need a
piece of paper from the office of road something or another (in Canberra)
saying you were allowed to import the car, and a duty reciept, as well as
the engineers report and a fist full of dollars.

Best of luck
(and give us a yell here in melbourne if you come here)
