John,
I've shortened coil springs on my Spit. I took the raw end and gently
heated the last turn with a propane torch until the steel just started
to glow. Using a pair of Channel Locks, the "loose end" can be pulled
down almost flush with its neighbor. Get a grip on the coils an start
heating. You'll be able to feel and see the coils converge as they heat.
Once pulled down, I used a 4" grider to the flatten the final turn.
Worked for me!
