Good answer Odd, good answer!!
The history behind the 'shield' is a long one (in years, anyway). The
ancient name for Coventry was "Mercia", and it was the home of a
mythical dragon called a Wyvern. The 'shield' is a stylised artist
conception of "The truncated wings of the Wyvern of Mercia." Leon
hadn't mentioned the coat of arms bit to me. So it's really a "Wing
Device" in classic Rolls-Bentley/Aston-Lagonda/
Moggie motoring-speak.
