Good advice, Dan, and a great summary of TR-4 circuitry.
I had the same problem recently and traced it quickly to 
the battery cable connection to the starter solenoid.  One word
of caution: the inside nut on the post secures the post - don't
try to remove it.  I did, thinking it would be easier to clean.
Hmm, stuck, I'll twist harder.  Snap.  The post rotated breaking
away all the insulation on that side.  So having learned of
the innards of that device by first-hand examination, I cleaned
both posts with the nuts on.  My solenoid is now swathed
mummy-like with electrical tape, awaiting its replacement.
Still works.
