In all of the Spits I have dealt with so far, there is a mounting hole
on the support bracket along the bottom of the dash, just to the right
of the steering wheel (the outer edge of the bracket is usually
vinyl-covered while the rear is just flat metal -- that's where the hole
is).  It should mount straight vertically, with the winding cap through
the hole and pointing to the floorboard.  If there is no hole, you might
want to consider making one, or just do as I did with one I had with a
broken mount and let it hang down along the transmission cover (gonna
get to it *one* day...).
