emissions information

Does anyone know of a useful book about the theory and practice behind
emissions equipment and engine modification for emissions control?  I am
finding that most sources are rather sketchy about how the various
procedures work.  At most, they're fairly complete about the equipment,
but the effects of engine modifications and of fuel system and ignition
adjustment are not generally mentioned.
