Ken,
the factory recommendation for a '72 Spit is that You use:

Ambient temp Over 30F -  GL4 quality SAE 90 gear oil
Ambient temp Under 30F - GL4 quality SAE 80 gear oil

both gearbox and rear axle. 
And remember... The factory is always right...  ;-)
