Weren't the silver/white/? on black plates illegal after 1 January
of 1973? That was my understanding.

You are quite right,I was only going by my fading memory:
The legislation states: "All vehicles registered after 1st January 1973 must
use reflex reflective plates" and contrary to popular belief there is only
one font allowed by law.
Anything other than this does not comply and drivers,as well as owners, commit
the offense.
Furthermore, the height of every letter or figure must be 3 + 1/8 inches.
Width of every letter or figure must be 2 + 1/4 inches.
Thickness of every letter or figure must be 9/16 inches.
Spacing between groups of every letter or figure must be 1 + 5/16 inches.
Spacing between letters and figures must be 7/16 inches.
Top/Bottom margin (minimum) must be 7/16 inches.
Side margins (minimum) must be 1 inch.
If there is a message such as a dealer name in any of the margins then the
relevant distance is between the letters or figures and the message.
most dealers put their name on registration number plates in contravention of
this.
Well,you did ask!
