thrust washers

I'm new to the list and I realize that this is probably a subject that's 
been talked about too often before, but I'd like some information on the 
thrust-washer problem on 6-cylinder motors. I was told that I should check 
end play periodically with a dial indicator. Does anyone still have old 
E-mail regarding this procedure or other fixes?
