Listers,
On a somewhat positive note, I got the Spitfar thru the CA smog
politics, complete with the Weber and Mallory dual point. Won't divuldge where
this was done, as I don't want to have this poor soul to become inundated with
pleas from around the area, suffice it to say, it was in the greater SF bay
area (much greater).
The biggest incongruity with the whole thing, the Weber, although
considered an illegal aftermarket add-on, ran so clean we had to severely
de-tune the motor to get enough scannable emissions so that the computer didn't
think we were trying to fool it. Also had to stuff rags in the other three
tubes of the Monza exhaust and back up the exhaust to exit thru the tested tube
as the computer thought there was an air leak (not enough CO's and CO2's).
Sure seems like the whole process is rigged when the stated purpose is
to cut down emissions, yet the procedure must include the introduction of
unburned particulate in order to register the machines operating tolerances.
SB42 will be a welcome addition for me as I will become exempt, yet I think the
whole thing should be revamped to allow whatever modifications to the motor as
legal, providing the emissions meet the standards.
But, as the Clintonistas are prone to say....We're doing it for the
children.
(sorry 'bout the political cheap shot, I know how you all hate to have the man
belittled, especially when he does such a good job by himself)
You go Paula !
