Tranny removal

Hello all!-
I was wondering if anybody could tell me if I can remove the tranny on
my '75 Spit from underneath the car? (without the motor!) I think all
this talk about jackstands/safety got me thinking about this upcoming
job this winter!
Is it easier to just pull the whole engine/tranny out the top?
I thought there might be at least a few owners out there that might have
had to do this? ;-)
