Made it back from VTR OK. The GT6 ran flawlessly the
entire time in spite of 95 degree heat most of the way.
Well, almost flawlessly. For some reason, as soon as
the car comes to a stop after a long distance run on
the highway, it always leaves about a 6" diameter pool
of gear grease from the hole in the bottom of the bell
housing. The overdrive has just been rebuilt and the
gearbox front seal replaced (again) so defective seals
don't seem to be the answer. The vent on top of the
overdrive seems to be functional so I don't think it's
due to a pressure buildup. Is it possible that filling
it up to the filler plug on the side of the gearbox
actually results in it being overfilled? Short hops
around town don't seem to result in it leaking any
more than a few drops at a time (I consider this normal
operation of the Dynamic Oil Spray Rustproofing System).
Yeah, I know it's marking its territory, but does
anybody else's GT6 do this? Mine has been doing it for
years. Maybe I should just accept it and keep filling
the gearbox every 1000 miles? It does seem to keep
dropping until it needs to be topped off. Yes, I'm
sure the front seal is turned the right direction,
flat side facing into the bell housing.
Just received the new gearbox cover seals from TRF
which should make removing and replacing the cover
a bit less painful. Any suggestions as to what sort
of adhesive to attach them with? Weatherstripping
cement, silicone, etc?
It was nice to visit with some of the folks I exchange
email with on the Triumphs list in spite of my having
the worst case of respiratory crud of my entire life.
Looking forward to "Lutefisk Fest" (say that quickly
ten times) in Minneapolis next year.
