Marco,
The requirements may vary by state but basically very little will have
to be done. The car can remain RHD, DOT (U.S. Dept. of Transportation)
sealed beam headlamps should be fitted, you may have to have a laminated
windscreen (of course TR2/3 windscreens are easily demountable so you
may be able to borrow one for the inspection. In California you must
have an inside and an outside (drivers side) rearview mirror or two
outside mirrors. Also, if your brake light must have a red lense, I
have seen some euro TR2s with orange lenses. Seatbelts are not required
but are a good idea. If fitted, they should have DOT approved markings.
That's about it. If you are moving to California, you will get to pay an
environmental impact fee of approx. US$365 at first registration. Hopefully,
this may be repealed for older cars soon. Yearly registration (vehicle use
tax) should be about US$44. Insurance is required but is reasonable for
a "collector car" that sees limited use.
Hope this helps, let us know where you end up.
Cheers,
Kurt Oblinger
