I would highly suggest returning to the stock mechanical
pump unless you have some particular application which
calls for a higher fuel pressure (PI, highly modified
carb setup such as Webers, etc.) or are in a racing
application where you are having performance problems
with the stock pump. You may even find that the stock
mechanical pump is still there on the engine block,
and it may even work! If it doesn't work, it probably
only needs a rebuild (about $15 for a kit.)
I think you'll find the stock mechanical unit to be
rugged, easy to rebuild, and essentially trouble-free.
Ask an MG owner what they think of the electrical
pump they got instead...
You can buy a new aftermarket (repro) fuel pump for
about $40 (I think) and a NOS mechanical fuel pump
should only be around $100. The stock style has
the advantage that they are easily rebuildable,
even though this isn't generally required even
after 100K miles if the car has received at least
occasional use to keep things from drying out.
Note that when you do remove the fuel pump, be sure to
have something with which to plug the fuel line
to the tank. The "gravity feed" feature you mention
will come pretty close to emptying the tank onto
the floor of your garage! (I always learn these
things the hard way...)
