ring gear/starter

This weekend I finally put my car on the road, a 1967 TR4A IRS.

Heard a strange sound, and finally the car would not start. I had just
rebuilt the engine this winter,
and now I need to replace the ring gear and the starter (it got shredded).

What would cause this? The new engine was installed with a new clutch.
