maybe i'm to late to help, but i just spent memorial day on my back doing the
same job. what i used was a seal removal tool, which is a nasty looking
thing with two curved hooks on the end (looks like a minature medival battle
axe). it takes patience but as you work the thing around the shaft the seal
will work loose. there is about a 1/2" clearance between the seal and the
bearing - plenty of room for the tool hook.
i borrowed the one i used, but a new one can't be over $10.
