        Kevin,

I had a similar problem when I rebuilt my old '76 Midget (Spitfire
engine). I had failed to properly torque one of the 4 flywheel bolts, which
proceeded to back out and rub against various clutch parts when the engine was
turning. As a result, the clutch never fully disengaged, and though the car was
drivable, the tranny made a grinding noise when shifted. At rest with the engine
switched off, the clutch appeared to function normally of course. This was a
tough one to diagnose, and I wound up spending much time and $ on clutch
hydraulics before reluctantly pulling the engine and discovering my error. Could
this be your problem?

        Best Regards,
