timing by ear?

some kind soul email me a method of setting the timing by 
ear but i've managed hose my mailspool. the method was something
like advance the timing until the engine ping, then back off
a couple of degrees. could someone, perhaps the original kind
soul, please refresh me on this method of setting the timing?
