The rods are available at a lot of local locations. Sears usually has
them. I find them at welding supply stores, flea markets etc. A guy in
florida came up with the stuff many years ago. There was a writeup in
Popular Science about it. It took a long while for it to get on the
market.
I always keep some on hand. the stuff is great for repairing aluminum,
all zinc base metals and a lot of others that I don't know about.
A propane torch works fine as long as you can get the work area hot
enough to melt the rod and blend in to the surface. Just clean the
surface good (stainless steel brush recommended but not necessary) and
sort of tin the surface by flicking any impurities out as you apply the
new material. Once you get a clean tinned surface you can do whatever
you want.
