Martin,

K&N call for servicing filters every 50-100K miles for street driven,
more often for off-road/dusty use.  They claim a certain amount of dirt
build up will actually help the filter work better.

They also say to use only their cleaner (of course) and warn against
using strong, caustic or solvent based detergents.  I would be careful
with Formula 409 type cleaners.
