My question is: has anyone ever installed a set of coil-assisted shocks
on the rear and eliminated the leaf springs altogether?
If this is a subject that has been covered already, and there exists
FAQ's on it, could someone please guide me to them?

Yes, I made this mistake once, ONCE. I was in High-school at the time
and working on becoming a DPO. Rather than taking the time to fix my 78
Spit properly, I figured that if I just installed coil-over shocks I
wouldn't have to worry about that horrible camber problem with the right
rear wheel.-Stupid kid- I never thought for a moment how it might affect
the suspension geometry.(I had just failed geometry anyway) That night,
my best friend and I decided to try it out on one of our favorite
twisty-curvy roads. When I hit a decreasing-radius turn at about 70,
the rear end slid out from under me, and we smashed into a ditch and
flipped the car into a fencerow. Lucky we weren't killed-especially my
friend, who went through the top and landed a couple hundred feet away.
No, we didn't have seat belts on, but that's a different story
altogether. The end result was a completely destroyed Spitfire-(I think
I salvaged the steering wheel) and a hard lesson learned.
I'm not sure if this will help you with your project, but I for one
would take the time to replace the leaf spring!
