The evaporative system which varies from year to year is primarily to
contain the vapors from the unburned fuel sitting in your tank. Rather than
venting it into the atmosphere as done on cars built before the late
sixties/early seventies. It should not effect drivability although some
cars may be jetted slightly leaner because of the system. The carbon
canister is there to hold or store the fumes until the engine (smiths valve
or carb port[s]) allows them to be drawn into the engine and be combusted.
There is no performance advantage/disadvantage, in a properly maintained
system, and really no reason for disconnecting the system. Racers
disconnect most ( not all ) emission systems mainly for simplicity. The
advantage of reconnecting it back up correctly is you will no longer be
venting the fumes out into the atmosphere. Hope that helps :-)
