My 2 cents worth.

When I recently reassembled my '58 TR3 engine I used Permatex Aviation
Form-a-Gasket number 2 (non-hardening) gasket sealer.  Cheap and available
everywhere (at least in the states!).  I coated both sides of all the
gaskets, (except for the manifold gaskets).  I haven't installed this engine
yet so can't say for sure that I'm leak free.  However, when I rebuilt my '57
TR3 30 plus years ago, I used the same sealer for everything!.  I had no
problems.
